A viral photograph showing an Israeli soldier hitting a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon with a sledgehammer has sparked outrage.
In a statement on Monday, the Israeli military confirmed the authenticity of the image that was widely shared online, garnering more than 5 million views on X
After being extensively circulated online, a picture of an Israeli soldier allegedly striking a figure of Jesus with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon has drawn harsh criticism.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, expressed his “stunned and saddened” reaction to what transpired. “We apologise for this incident and to every Christian whose feelings were hurt,” stated Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.
The figure, according to locals, was on a crucifix outside a family home on the outskirts of Debel, one of the few communities where people have stayed during Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah.
“We totally reject the desecration of the cross, which is our sacred symbol, as well as all other religious symbols,” said Father Fadi Flaifel, the leader of Debel’s congregation.
The Israeli military stated that it saw the incident “with great severity” and emphasised that the soldier’s conduct was ” wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops” and verified the authenticity of the image that was making the rounds on social media. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated that it was collaborating with the Christian community to “restore the statue to its place” and that “appropriate measures” will be taken against those responsible.
A ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, mediated by the United States, went into effect on Friday, but thousands of Israeli soldiers are still occupying a large portion of southern Lebanon.
Although both sides have accused one another of violating the ceasefire, fighting between the IDF and the Shia Muslim military group Hezbollah has been suspended for six weeks.
Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister and US ambassador to Israel, stated on X that “swift, severe, & public consequences are needed” after learning of the vandalism on the statue.
The images of the Israeli soldier and the Jesus monument were immediately criticised by right-wing US pundits. Former congressman and adviser to President Donald Trump Matt Gaetz remarked, “Horrific”, when reposting the image.
The image was also tweeted by former US representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who wrote, “Our greatest ally that takes billions of our tax dollars and weapons every year.”
When Israeli police barred Jerusalem’s senior Roman Catholic leader from attending a private Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday, there was a global uproar last month. This was due to safety concerns during the Iran War, according to Israeli authorities.
“Unfortunate overreach already having major repercussions around the world” is how Huckabee described that incident. He claimed that the decision to refuse the Church leaders access was “difficult to understand or justify” given Israeli limitations that at the time permitted religious meetings of up to 50 persons.
A “recent surge in overt animosity towards Christianity” is described in a 2025 report by the Rossing Center, a Jerusalem-based organisation that seeks to improve interfaith relations in the Holy Land. The report attributes this to “a continued deepening of polarisation and ultra-nationalist political trends”.
English was used in Benjamin Netanyahu’s post regarding the Jesus statue. “The Christian population in Israel thrives, unlike elsewhere in the Middle East.”
“Israel is the only country in the region where the Christian population and standard of living are growing,” he continued. Israel is the only country in the Middle East that upholds the right to freedom of religion for everyone.
It detailed 155 events, including 52 attacks on church property and 61 physical assaults on individuals. According to the research, spitting at churches and clergy members—often in broad daylight or even in front of police officers—was the most frequent manifestation of animosity.
According to a separate analysis from the centre, this animosity is partly caused by Jewish worries about Christian proselytising and some people’s perception that Christianity is idolatry.
The center reported a dramatic increase in verbal abuse incidents, which it claimed reinforced Christians’ belief that they are viewed as “unwanted guests” in Israel rather than as a valid and essential component of the religious and social fabric of the Holy Land.
The rise of Israeli nationalism and a growing belief that “the whole world’s an antisemite, that everyone who’s not us should be rejected and should not be here” are fuelling hostility toward non-Jews, according to Hana Bendowsky, who oversees a Rossing Center project to teach Israeli Jews about Christianity.
As the majority in their nation, Jews had “a responsibility to the minority,” she argued, citing widespread miscommunication and a mindset of “Jewish superiority” among some Israelis.
No one nearby stopped the soldier, Ms Bendowsky bemoaned.
She stated, “Education about how inappropriate and harmful this kind of thing is, beyond just damaging our image, is insufficient.” “It harms our humanity, our identity, and our souls.”
Two days after Israel and the US started a war on Tehran at the end of February, Hezbollah started launching rockets at Israel in support of Iran.
Religious and Political Sensitivity
Lebanon is known for its religious diversity, with significant Christian and Muslim populations living side by side. Acts like this risk:
- Increasing sectarian tensions
- Damaging fragile community relations
- Escalating political and military tensions in border regions
Religious symbols such as statues of Jesus Christ hold deep spiritual importance, making such incidents particularly sensitive.
Official Responses
So far, responses have included:
- Calls for investigation and accountability
- Demands for clarification from Israeli authorities
- Appeals for restraint to avoid further escalation
There has not yet been a widely confirmed official statement detailing the full circumstances of the incident.
This incident comes amid broader tensions in the Middle East, where even small actions can have significant ripple effects:
- It may strain relations between Lebanon and Israel
- Could inflame already tense regional dynamics
- Risks being used politically by different groups
According to Lebanese officials, Israel launched a military assault on March 2 that resulted in the displacement of over a million Lebanese and the deaths of over 2,290 persons, including 100 healthcare personnel and 177 children. According to Israeli sources, Hezbollah assaults have killed two civilians and thirteen Israeli soldiers in the same time frame.
